BAD: Ma Huang/Ephedra falls under the potentially unsafe category; according to FDA’s list of diet products. A lot of hospitals have reported that patients that have taken Ephedra experienced side effects like addiction, insomnia, chest pains, stroke and even death. FDA also considered that Ephedra has insufficient weight loss results for it to be considered as effective.
